Seminyak, Bali – Bali tourism revenue contribution, Bali Governor Wayan Koster has called for greater recognition of the island’s outsized contribution to Indonesia’s tourism economy, revealing that Bali generated a staggering Rp107 trillion (approx. $6.9 billion) in foreign exchange earnings in 2024—nearly 44% of the nation’s total tourism revenue.
Speaking at the opening of Hanura Party’s Regional Congress at Trans Hotel Resort Seminyak on Monday (11/8/2025), Koster emphasized that while Bali drives nearly half of Indonesia’s tourism income, the island receives insufficient infrastructure support in return.
Bali’s Dominance in Indonesia’s Tourism Economy
With 6.4 million foreign tourists in 2024—46% of Indonesia’s total international arrivals—Bali remains the country’s undisputed tourism powerhouse. Yet, Koster argues that the central government’s allocation for infrastructure fails to reflect this contribution.
“Bali’s fiscal capacity is limited, yet we bear the burden of maintaining global tourism standards,” Koster stated. “We don’t ask for special autonomy—just fair treatment in infrastructure, transportation, clean water, and waste management to ensure sustainable tourism.”
A Call for Investment, Not Just Gratitude
Despite Bali’s global reputation—often overshadowing Indonesia’s broader tourism appeal—Koster highlighted a stark imbalance in development funding.
“Indonesia should thank Bali—not just in words, but in concrete action,” he asserted. “Without proper infrastructure, Bali’s ability to sustain this economic engine is at risk.”
Key concerns include:
-
Inadequate transportation networks straining under tourist demand
-
Water scarcity threatening long-term sustainability
-
Waste management crises damaging Bali’s environmental image
The Push for Policy Change
Koster has formally appealed to the House of Representatives (DPR) for a revised funding model, arguing that Bali’s unique status warrants targeted investment.
“Other regions receive special treatment—why not Bali, which delivers nearly half of Indonesia’s tourism revenue?” he questioned.
Why This Matters for Bali’s Future
The governor’s appeal comes as Bali faces mounting pressures:
-
Overtourism straining local resources
-
Global competition from emerging destinations
-
Climate vulnerabilities threatening coastal resorts
Without urgent infrastructure upgrades, experts warn that Bali’s tourism golden goose could falter—impacting not just the island but Indonesia’s broader economy.
